The adding on part is straightforward, it's the mechanism that puzzled me. I didn't grow up playing or watching it so my introduction to the concept was just watching to the end of a game and seeing the extra time slapped on without explanation. When I read about it, it still seemed too casual and arbitary a method of calculation considering its importance.
