I would say "yuck" to almost all the foods held in high esteem by my own ancestors, and would not be insulted by others doing the same.

That said, I can kind of get where she's coming from. I think she could have taken a different approach though -- instead of getting defensive and accusatory, something like "your comment makes me feel..." that could start a dialogue. Kindness is everything.
