I think scientists are conservative by training — in general they require a very high degree of certainty before making a prediction. There are so many unknowns here that we can’t be sure how soon we might face complete catastrophe. But I’ve read enough articles to know that many specialists in the fields under study are very, very frightened right now. And yeah, that’s scary.
